Green Light for World Cup

LAHORE – The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially ended weeks of speculation by confirming the national team’s participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The announcement, made late Sunday, coincided with a spectacular reveal of the team’s new official jersey, dubbed the “Vanguard Markhor Edition.”

A Conditional Participation

Following high-level consultations between PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and the federal government, Pakistan has been granted permission to travel to Sri Lanka for the tournament. However, the approval comes with a historic condition: Pakistan will not take the field for their group-stage match against India, scheduled for February 15 in Colombo.

The decision is a gesture of solidarity with Bangladesh, who were removed from the tournament after the ICC declined their request to move matches out of India. While Pakistan will compete in all other fixtures, they will forfeit the points for the high-profile India clash.

The “Markhor” Jersey Reveal

Shortly after the government’s nod, the PCB unveiled the official kit for the mega event at the Gaddafi Stadium. The Vanguard Markhor Edition features:

  • Design: A vibrant light green base with darker green geometric patterns.
  • Symbolism: The design prominently features motifs of the Markhor, Pakistan’s national animal, symbolizing the strength, resilience, and climbing spirit of the team.
  • Star Presence: The launch ceremony featured captain Salman Ali Agha, alongside superstars Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Naseem Shah, all donning the new colors.

Departure and World Cup Schedule

The squad is scheduled to depart for Sri Lanka on the afternoon of February 2 via a special flight. Under the leadership of Salman Ali Agha, the team will begin their quest for a second T20 title with the following schedule (all matches in Sri Lanka):

  • Feb 4: Warm-up match vs Ireland
  • Feb 7: vs Netherlands (Tournament Opener)
  • Feb 10: vs USA
  • Feb 15: vs India (Boycott/Forfeit)
  • Feb 18: vs Namibia

A Team in High Spirits

The announcement comes at a perfect time for the fans, as Pakistan just completed a 3-0 “Green Sweep” against Australia in Lahore. With the momentum of a series win and a fresh new look, the Shaheens are being hailed as one of the favorites to reach the final stages of the tournament.
