Ajaz Patel and Tom Blundell Return to New Zealand’s Test Squad for Final Match Against West Indies

New Zealand Cricket has confirmed the return of Ajaz Patel and Tom Blundell to the Test squad for the third and final match against the West Indies, set to begin on December 18 at Bay Oval, Mt Maunganui. Patel replaces Blair Tickner, who was forced out of the squad after dislocating his shoulder during the recently concluded second Test.

Blundell, New Zealand’s first-choice wicketkeeper, returns to the fold after recovering from a hamstring tear sustained during the opening Test. Mitch Hay, who filled in for Blundell, will now head back to Canterbury for domestic duties.

Patel Looks to Make Impact After Long Absence
Ajaz Patel, who was named player of the match during his most recent Test appearance in November 2024, will be eyeing a return to Test cricket on home soil for the first time since February 2020. Known for his knack of taking key wickets, Patel’s inclusion brings an extra dimension to New Zealand’s bowling attack.

Head Coach Rob Walter expressed confidence in Patel’s abilities, saying, “Ajaz is someone we can trust to come in and do a job if required. Bay Oval has historically offered more turn than other surfaces in New Zealand, and the fact he turns the ball away from the right-hander is an appealing prospect. His addition also provides more variety in our bowling attack, complementing the seamers who have been performing well this series.”

Blundell’s Leadership and Experience Vital for the Side
Blundell’s return is equally significant, as his experience and leadership will be invaluable in guiding New Zealand’s relatively young squad, especially with a few players new to Test cricket. Walter praised Blundell’s recovery, stating, “Tom has recovered well from his hamstring injury, and we’re thrilled to have him back. His leadership on and off the field is crucial for the team, and we’re pleased to see him return at a time when his experience is needed most.”

New Zealand Looks to Wrap Up Series with a Win
The rest of the squad remains unchanged following New Zealand’s victory in the second Test, which gave them a 1-0 series lead after the opening Test ended in a tense draw. With the final Test fast approaching, the Kiwis will be looking to build on their momentum and seal the series win at the Bay Oval.

Full Squad:

  • Tom Latham (c), Tom Blundell, Michael Bracewell, Kristian Clarke, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, Daryl Mitchell, Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, Michael Rae, Rachin Ravindra, Kane Williamson, Will Young

The third Test promises to be an exciting conclusion to the series, with both sides eager to finish strong.
