Bangladesh Excluded from T20 World Cup 2026 Scotland Named Replacement

In a historic and dramatic shake-up just weeks before the tournament opener, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially removed Bangladesh from the 2026 T20 World Cup roster. Following a protracted standoff over security arrangements and venue demands, the ICC has confirmed that Scotland will replace the Tigers in Group C.

The Standoff

The decision comes after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) failed to confirm their team’s travel to India by the ICC’s 24-hour ultimatum. The dispute erupted earlier this month when the BCB refused to play their group-stage matches in India, citing security concerns after pacer Mustafizur Rahman was released from his IPL franchise under controversial circumstances.

Despite the ICC sharing independent security assessments deeming the threat level “low to moderate” and rejecting the BCB’s request to shift matches to neutral venues in Sri Lanka, the Bangladeshi board remained defiant. With the schedule finalized and logistics locked in, the ICC Board ultimately voted to enforce the replacement protocol rather than alter the tournament framework.

Scotland Steps In

Scotland, the highest-ranked team outside the initial qualifiers, now finds themselves thrust onto the world stage. They will slot directly into Group C, joining defending champions England, the West Indies, Nepal, and Italy.

Their campaign kicks off immediately on February 7 against the West Indies in Kolkata, followed by matches against Italy and England, before concluding their group stage against Nepal in Mumbai.

A Historic Precedent

This marks the first time a Full Member nation has been removed from a global event due to a refusal to travel. The exclusion is a significant blow to Bangladesh cricket, with players reportedly expressing frustration over losing the chance to compete on the global stage due to administrative deadlocks.

While the BCB has vowed to “keep fighting” and hinted at legal appeals, the ICC has treated the matter as closed, issuing formal invitations to Cricket Scotland to ensure the tournament proceeds without further disruption.
