The Desert Vipers’ unbeaten run was finally halted on Tuesday night as the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders handed the table-toppers their first defeat of the season at the Zayed Cricket Stadium. A thrilling one-run victory was set up by a scintillating knock of 76 runs from Liam Livingstone, with the Knight Riders’ bowlers holding their nerve to defend a total of 181/5.
Fakhar Zaman (44 off 32) and Max Holden (52 off 43) provided a solid foundation for the Vipers, with a crucial opening partnership that kept the chase on track. However, the Knight Riders’ bowlers, led by Andre Russell (2/16), Ajay Kumar (2/47), and Jason Holder (1/28), executed under pressure, leading to a narrow victory.
In response to the daunting target of 182, Zaman and Holden steered the Vipers through an impressive powerplay, which saw them accumulate 53 runs without losing a wicket. The pair rotated the strike well and found timely boundaries, with Holden bringing up a fluent half-century off 40 balls, including six boundaries.
The Vipers were cruising until Russell made the breakthrough, removing Holden in the 12th over. From there, the pressure mounted as the Vipers only managed one boundary between the 11th and 14th overs. Russell struck again in the 14th over to remove Zaman, leaving the Vipers at 114/2. Sunil Narine also played a key role in the middle overs, conceding just 23 runs from his four overs.
Hasan Nawaz broke the drought with two consecutive sixes off Ajay Kumar in the 16th over, but fell on the next delivery. Sam Curran (11 off 10) and Shimron Hetmyer (7 off 4) were dismissed in quick succession, leaving the Vipers needing 19 runs from 12 balls. A cameo from Khuzaima Tanveer (16 off 9) almost got the Vipers over the line, but his departure in the final over sealed the Knight Riders’ victory as Kumar successfully defended 12 runs in the final over.
The Knight Riders’ innings had a difficult start, with the team slumping to 9/2 inside two overs. Khuzaima Tanveer struck on the first ball of the match, dismissing Phil Salt for his 11th victim of the season, while Lockie Ferguson trapped Michael Pepper (4 off 3) LBW. Alex Hales (25 off 18) countered with a quick-fire innings, hitting two fours and two sixes, before falling to Ferguson in the fifth over, leaving the Knight Riders at 48/3 at the end of the powerplay.
Liam Livingstone (76 off 48) and UAE’s Alishan Sharafu (39 off 35) steadied the ship with a crucial 50-run stand from 46 balls. Just as they began to accelerate, Sharafu fell to Sam Curran while attempting his fourth six of the night. The Knight Riders rallied to reach 112/4 after 15 overs, with Livingstone and Sherfane Rutherford (24* off 14) adding a further 69 runs in the last five overs. Livingstone dispatched Qais Ahmad for two successive sixes to reach his fifty off 36 balls and finished his innings with six fours and three sixes.
Rutherford took on Noor Ahmad in a 19-run over before Livingstone was dismissed by Ferguson in the final over. Their partnership of 68 runs from 30 balls propelled the Knight Riders to a total of 181/5.
Player of the Match, Liam Livingstone, reflected on his performance:
“It was a very important win for us tonight. I’m pleased with how I paced my innings—getting 25 off 25 and then accelerating at the right time. It feels good to contribute with a match-winning knock.”
Desert Vipers’ captain, Lockie Ferguson, commented on the loss:
“Obviously, it’s not the result we wanted, but it was an exciting game of cricket. The boys will be disappointed, but we’ll take the positives from tonight’s performance.”
